HOW THE GM DRAFT WORKS

GM Draft & trade rules

Build your roster, follow its regular-season points, and make deals with other GMs.

1. Join and draft

Accept a league invitation or join with its invitation code, then have your $10 GM seat or sponsored seat activated before naming your team. The commissioner assigns the starting order. Up to 32 GM teams then select exclusive NHL players within their league, one pick per turn. The same NHL player may be drafted separately in another league.

The order reverses every round: with three teams, picks go 1–2–3, then 3–2–1. Picks cannot be changed. The commissioner may pause the draft or make a pick for a missing GM.

2. Fill your roster

Each team drafts 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies. The draft ends when every team has filled every spot.

The NHL regular season counts, including games played before a late draft pick. There are no weekly lineups or free-agent claims in this edition.

3. Score season points

Skater goal: 3 points. Skater assist: 2. Goalie win: 4. Goalie shutout: 3. These values lock when the draft starts.

Only NHL regular-season statistics count. The team with the most points at season end wins; equal totals share the finish.

4. Offer a trade

Trading opens once the draft is complete. Offer one to three players from your roster for one to three on another GM team. Both sides must exchange the same number of forwards, defensemen, and goalies, so roster spots stay filled.

Trades stay inside this league. Only the receiving GM may accept or decline; the sender may cancel. An unanswered offer expires seven days after it is sent or at the GM trade deadline, whichever comes first. Trades close at March 1, 2027 at 3:00 PM EST. The commissioner can update this setting if the NHL changes its deadline.

5. When a trade takes effect

Acceptance moves the players immediately and is final in the trade desk. The system checks ownership again before the swap; an offer cannot go through if someone has moved. Other pending offers involving a swapped player become invalid.

Points in the latest NHL stats refresh at acceptance stay with the old team. Later points go to the new team. For example, if a player has 20 fantasy points at acceptance and later reaches 30, the old team keeps 20 and the new team gets 10.

6. NHL teams and other contests

If an NHL player is traded to another real-world club, their NHL team label updates, but your GM team keeps that player. Only an accepted trade on this site changes fantasy ownership.

GM trades do not change Weekly Game Picks, Scoring Champion, or Goalie GAA selections. The historical draft board continues to show which GM originally selected each player.

7. Injury reserve & call-ups

Each GM team has three reserve spots. After the draft, request a spot for a documented injured draft pick and choose an undrafted NHL player at the same position. Pending requests use a spot. The commissioner verifies the injury and approves or denies the request; scoring changes only upon approval.

Your injured player remains yours but stops earning GM points while on reserve. The call-up is exclusive and earns only points added between approval and release. When the drafted player is ready to return, request a return; the commissioner releases the call-up and the drafted player starts earning again. Points already earned stay with your GM team.

A player with an open reserve request or active reserve spot cannot be traded; call-ups cannot be traded. Injury call-ups may be approved after the GM trade deadline until the NHL regular season ends. No automatic injury status is inferred from team changes.
